What is retinol good for?

First discovered in 1913, retinol is the naturally occurring active form of vitamin A, which plays an essential role in maintaining skin's barrier function. In fact, a retinol deficiency in patients could mean they develop hyperkeratinized, dry and rough skin - features of a prematurely aged epidermis.

At the surface: Retinol smooths, evens and brightens the complexion, helping to reduce the look of age spots and greyness.

In-depth: it safeguards the skin's support structures to attenuate wrinkles.

RETINOL: DERMATOLOGISTS STAR INGREDIENT …BUT NOT WITHOUT CHALLENGES

While retinol is a hero in the anti-ageing arsenal, it has also been synonymous with tolerance issues and formulation challenges. Until recently, it simply was not a viable option for patients with sensitive skin because of the peeling, redness and discomfort it could often cause. Also, due to its fragile structure and photosensitizing effects, Retinol is usually reserved for overnight application only, especially if you have sensitive skin.

INCORPORATING RETINOL INTO YOUR EVENING ROUTINE

As retinol treatments such as La-Roche-Posay's Redermic Anti-Wrinkle Treatment contain active ingredients that make the skin very sensitive to sunlight, it is recommended that they are applied in the evening as part of your night-time routine. Simply apply a pea-sized amount of the retinol night cream to your face and neck after cleansing, ensuring you don’t forget to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face the morning after. If your skin needs a little extra hydration, add a Hyaluronic Acid serum before your retinol night cream. This will also help soothe any minor irritation you may experience.

Over time, your skin will appear more even and firm with a noticeable reduction in fine lines and deep wrinkles.
