Why do my spots get worse during the summer?
A common misconception is that sweat causes blemish-prone skin to breakout. In fact, it is in fact a combination of sweat which becomes mixed up with excess oil, dirt, and bacteria that clogs the skin’s pores and leads to breakouts.
Another reason that spots worsen during summer, is the keratolytic effect the sun has on skin. It means that when our skin is exposed to sunlight, the rate at which our skin renews itself is increased. This however, has a reverse effect when we come out of the sun, whereby our skin cell renewal process slows down. As a result of this slowing down, dead cells are kept on the surface of the skin, which clogs pores. So it’s important to take care for your skin during summer to avoid breakouts.
Caring for skin during summer months
Cleanse:
Cleansing is of paramount importance during hotter months. Removing sweat, makeup and oil will ensure that they do not clog pores and form new spots. Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel is formulated with oily skin and imperfections in mind. Use the gel morning and evening for a clean and purified feel which will set you up perfectly for any summer’s day. The gel is to be worked into a lather and massaged onto skin in order to ensure freshness and also control excess sebum.
Tone:
Using a toner in the summer is a good idea for those concerned about the size of pores and shine that can often come with blemish-prone skin. Serozinc is a micro-mist water which can be sprayed onto skin as often as necessary - perfect for a burst of freshness on a sizzling hot day. The toning mist offers immediate anti-shine and pore tightening benefits, as well as soothing and purifying skin.
Moisturise:
Don’t skip moisturiser just because it’s summer! Effaclar Mat is great for those with shiny skin as it works to control excess sebum, as well as on the effects of humidity and shine. The mattifying effect is ideal for those concerned about excess shine over summer, whilst the non-greasy texture is perfect for those who are worried about clogged pores. For those concerned with blackheads and shine Effaclar K (+) is the product to use because it fights signs of oxidisation and excess sebum. Finally, those with spots should use Effaclar DUO [+]. This legendary product for those with blemishes, contains salicylic acid and LHAs to exfoliate skin whilst also treating blemishes and inflammation.
Selecting the right coverage
Stick to a lightweight foundation during summer to allow your skin to breathe. Heavier formulas could block pores and encourage breakouts, so opt for a tinted moisturiser or BB cream.
Choosing sunscreen
Take time selecting your sunscreen. Forget greasy products that are likely to clog pores and instead look out for options which are light, water-resistant, and have a minimalist formula.
For instance, La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra-Light is perfect for those with normal to combination skin. The sun cream protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and is suitable for all skin types. It also comes in a tinted version, ideal for the summer months if you’re looking for a healthy glow.
The sunscreen is great for those with oily and acne prone skin due to its ultra-absorbent formula that disappears to leave a dry touch. It’s worth noting that Anthelios Anti-shine has been tested under extreme conditions to ensure resistance to heat and humidity so it should give you the protection you need without causing breakouts and shine.
Summer is definitely a time to be enjoyed, and having blemish-prone skin shouldn’t hold you back. Just make sure to care for your skin vigilantly and you’ll soon forget your skin worries!
