Toner Explained

A good-quality toner that’s right for your skin type can play an important role in looking after your facial skin.

What is a toner?

A toner is a liquid product, usually light and transparent in texture. It’s applied to the face morning and evening as part of your skincare routine.   Toners can perform a few different functions, depending on your skin type. A toner can…

· remove all traces of a creamy cleanser to make sure skin is completely clean and ready to absorb your moisturiser

· give your skin a cool or refreshing sensation

· have an astringent function, helping reduce the appearance of oil on the skin’s surface and making the skin feel less greasy. Some toners can help exfoliate the skin and unblock the look of pores.

· be used to deliver skincare benefits to the skin. A toner might include ingredients designed to soothe skin, refine the look of pores or improve hydration by attracting more moisture to the skin’s surface.

Should I use a toner?

Because a toner can have a few different roles, most skin types can benefit from using one. However if you have dryness-prone skin, it’s best to avoid astringent toners containing alcohol, as they could be too powerful for your skin and leave it feeling more dry.

Before choosing a toner, read some reviews and familiarise yourself with the range available for your skin type. Weigh up what benefits are most important to you and will complement the rest of your skincare routine. For example, if you’re using products that target oily skin and enlarged pores, a toner designed to target these issues will add power to your routine.

When should you use a toner?

Traditionally, toners are used after cleansing your skin. Liquid toners are applied using a cotton wool pad or cotton ball, which is swept over the skin avoiding the eye area. However, toners come in other forms too such a like sprays which can be misted over your face after cleansing and whenever needed throughout the day.
