So what is the best way of caring for a combination skin type? According to Consultant Dermatologist Dr Justine Hextall it all starts with how you cleanse. “Combination skin is often a result of over stripping or cleansing oily skin,” she says. “It sounds counterintuitive but choosing a gentler wash that doesn’t make the skin feel tight afterwards, will leave the skin soft and hydrated without dry patches. Additionally, a cold water rinse can help after cleansing”.
And what about when it comes to moisturising? “Do not be afraid to use a light moisturiser with combination skin,” Dr Hextall says. “I recommend doing this twice a day but if you are having to apply more frequently and are reaching for the moisturiser as soon as you have cleansed, it suggests that your skincare regime is too harsh and may be stripping the skin barrier”.
Gentle cleansing
If your skin does feel like it’s crying out for moisture, take Dr Hextall’s advice and switch to a gentler cleanser such as La Roche Posay’s Effaclar Gel Cleanser. Created specifically for combination skin types, this foaming facial wash removes oil-creating impurities such as dirt and sebum from the pores without disrupting the skin’s delicate balance. It’s also proven to improve the appearance of blackheads and keep those excess levels of shine at bay.
Lightweight moisturiser for combination skin
As Dr Hextall suggests, freshly cleansed skin should be followed by a lightweight moisturiser. La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar Mat has an oil-free formula that tackles shine while hydrating the skin for up to 8 hours. It is enriched with active ingredient sebolyse, absorbent micro powders and perlite, and it effectively reduces excess levels of sebum while keeping the complexion looking matte - even in the most humid or sweaty conditions.
If your skin is particularly prone to blackheads, Effaclar K(+) can help to transform the skin’s surface while simultaneously mattifying and hydrating the complexion. It’s also a great option if you favour aqua-gel textures that quickly absorb into the skin. It still, however, provides all-day comfort, effectively targeting drier areas.
Finally, as with any new skincare routine, consistency is key, so cleanse your face each morning and evening. Follow with your usual serum and lightweight moisturiser before completing your routine with broad-spectrum sunscreen – a vital step for every skin type.
