Lip care: How to avoid chapped lips

Dry lips can be sore, uncomfortable and even painful and also cause flaking and chapping that can leave you feeling self-conscious. Here we reveal the simple ways you can prevent chapped lips and the La Roche-Posay products that can provide instant comfort.

The causes of dry lips

There are also many external factors that can cause dry lips such as cold weather, spicy foods, sun exposure, long flights, or simply not giving the skin in this area the TLC it needs. Certain acne treatments and medications such as retinoids and vitamin A can also leave the lips more prone to chapping and dryness.

How to prevent dry and cracked lips

Unlike the skin on our face, the lips don’t have oil glands which can leave them more at risk of dryness. That’s why it’s important to replenish lost moisture with lip balms that contain hydrating lipids and oils especially during the colder months or times of stress. You should also protect the lips from UV damage with a broad-spectrum sunscreen as this can also leave the skin dehydrated and damaged.

The products to use

La Roche-Posay’s Nutritic range is developed to prevent dry lips and soothe cracked skin around the mouth. Nutritic Lips is a balm stick that provides intensive care for dry and sensitive lips and transforms signs of pulling, fragility, fineness and chapping. It’s formulated with a high concentration of hypoallergenic minimal ingredients and contains biolipids, ceramides 5 and La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water.

For very dry lips, consider Nutritic Intense for Dry Skin. This very hydrating cream is an effective way of soothing very dry and sensitive skin prone to tightness. It is a minimal, hypoallergenic formula that help to reinforce the skin’s natural barrier function while providing instant comfort.

Hygiene

If your lips are sore, you’ll probably touch your mouth frequently throughout the day. Try to remember to always wash your hands or use hand sanitiser before touching your mouth and applying lip balm. This will stop the spread of infections and viruses through the mouth.
