How adding more seeds to your diet can help improve your acne

Another week, another super food! After avocados, kale and goji berries, it's now all about seeds. Stuffed with nutrients, the tiny little grains are gaining rave reviews and are an essential part of our diet. So, will they improve our skin? Can seeds really help us deal with breakouts? We check with Charlie Hagan, head of training and nutrition at Hagan & Pappin in London.

So, what exactly are the benefits of adding seeds like flax seed (linseed), chia, sunflower or hemp to our diet?

1) More fiber is good for you

Charlie says “seeds are an excellent source of fiber which encourages good colon and gut health which can help combat acne.”

2) Good oils help cell regeneration

It turns out those tiny seeds can help with collagen production! “Seeds contain “good oils” which boosts collagen and help with cell regeneration and growth.” says Charlie.

3) Seeds are rich in omega 3

Charlie explains that “seeds are a natural source of omega 3 fatty acids. Studies show that omega 3 naturally inhibits inflammatory chemical leukotriene B4, helping reduce acne symptoms.”

4) Seeds are rich in zinc

He adds that “seeds contain zinc, a mineral which helps with gut problems and improves immunity.”

5) Seeds don’t suffer the curse of processed foods

“Seeds are a natural food containing little of the bad compounds found in processed foods known to aggravate acne such as hydrogenated oils, sugar, HFCS” says the expert in nutrition. It makes sense: the less additives the better for problem skin!

6) Seeds bring vitamin E to the party

The final reason to add seeds to your diet? “Seeds are high in vitamin E. Vitamin E can help reduce the appearance of acne scars and speed up recovery from acne.”

It looks like the latest craze for seeds is one those suffering from acne prone skin should embrace with gusto! Good fibre, oils, vitamins and antioxidants in a teeny tiny package – the perfect snack.
