While it might sound a little scary to think that there are acids in your skincare products, don't panic. Just as there are bacteria and oils that are good for us and those that aren't, certain acids are essential ingredients for effective skincare, especially when it comes to acne-prone skin. Introducing citric acid, salicylic acid and capryloyl salicylic acid. Let's get to know them better.
Hyaluronic acid
It has a name that's difficult to pronounce, but there's nothing complicated about hyaluronic acid! A naturally-occurring element in our skin, this acid helps our skin keep in hydration. As we get older, our skin is less able to retain moisture, which is where skincare products with added HA comes in. From plumping up our skin's surface to reducing inflammation[1] and smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, HA is helpful for all skin types and conditions
Salicylic acid
Salicylic acid[2] is a BHA (beta hydroxy acid) that occurs naturally as a compound in the bark of the white willow and leaves of the wintergreen plant. The acid can be applied topically (directly onto the skin) or in a formula, and is most used for its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to clear and prevent spots, specifically acne.
Capryloyl salicylic acid
An ester (a chemical compound derived from an acid) of salicylic acid, capryloyl salicylic acid is a versatile and multi-functional keratolytic agent, meaning it acts as an exfoliant all while remaining anti-inflammatory and anti-septic. Research[3] has shown the acid to improve the skin's natural collagen production, wrinkling, coarseness and hyper-pigmentation.
The next time you're looking on the back of any skincare product, you should feel a little more reassured and you’ll now be able to pick a product knowing that these skin-saving ingredients are key to radiant skin!
