Use products specifically formulated for dry, eczema-prone skin
Minimalist fragrance, paraben and preservative-free formulas are ideal for babies’ delicate skin
A good skincare routine to reduce the frequency of flare-ups and management of flare-ups when they do occur is vital
Eczema is a common condition for young children, generally appearing in the first six months to five years of a child’s life. Babies often develop rashes on their face around the cheeks and chin, and sometimes around the elbows and knees. Although it can be alarming, it’s reassuring to know that it’s a common condition and can be managed.
So, if your baby has eczema what can you do?
1. Avoid allergens
To best care for your baby’s skin it’s important to know which type of eczema you are dealing with and what makes it worse. Find out what triggers the eczema and take measures to avoid these. It might be as simple as wool clothing, detergent or even dust, or require a more in depth analysis, and possible dietary changes.
2. Check the label
Choose a moisturiser without any harsh preservatives. But do pick products containing glycerol that are particularly good for very rough skin or if itching is a problem. Keep clear of any skincare products containing fragrances or foaming gels or soaps that may irritate your little one’s skin.
3. Add emollient
Adding a soothing emollient oil to water can help lock in moisture and soothe delicate young skin during bath-time.
4. Moisturise daily
Try a moisturising balm or an ointment and apply within 5 minutes of a bath or shower, when absorption is at its best. Apply daily for best results.
5. Avoid urea or Lactic Acid
Expert and dermatologist, Dr Justine Kluk says “Avoid products with urea or lactic acid, as they may irritate the skin of very young children if present in high concentrations.”
New parents are often anxious when it comes down their baby’s skin health - and understandably so! If in doubt, consult a dermatologist or your GP, or talk to your pharmacist about products such as Lipikar Baume AP+, a fragrance-free moisturising balm, specifically formulated for delicate, young skin, and suitable to use from birth
